Einsiedeln

Einsiedeln and the Monastery

📜 Founding and Early History
  • The site’s origins go back to c. 835 AD, when Saint Meinrad, a Benedictine monk, established a hermitage on the forested slopes of what is now Einsiedeln.
  • After Meinrad was killed in 861 AD, other hermits continued to live there.
  • The first Benedictine monastery was founded in 934 AD by Eberhard (a priest from Strasbourg), who became its first abbot.
  • Tradition says the original church was consecrated in 948 — in a legendary story, Christ himself is said to have done the consecration.
🏰 Building and Architecture
  • The present baroque monastery complex — the one most visitors see today — was built mainly in the early 1700s (from about 1704–1734/1735). This replaced many earlier Romanesque and Gothic structures.
  • It’s considered one of Switzerland’s largest and most impressive Baroque architectural ensembles.
